Show Notes
Show Notes from Julian Hall
If you’re taking a show to the Fringe (or beyond), a fresh set of experienced eyes can make a real difference.
Show notes are a natural extension of Julian’s extensive experience in comedy PR, and as a comedy critic for leading publications including The Independent, Metro, The Stage, Chortle, Fest and London Is Funny.
Textual Healing PR has significant experience with acts bringing shows to the Edinburgh Fringe, and a show notes session can be invaluable to help sharpen structure, clarify themes, and maximise comedic impact.
Show notes generally focus on the overall structure of a show, how clearly its themes and ideas are landing, and where there’s scope to squeeze more comic juice from existing lines or scenarios.
With the realities of the Fringe in mind, Julian also gives attention to pacing, presentation and shape, always working with your natural persona and momentum as a performer.
What’s involved
Julian can either attend a preview or your show in person or you can send a recording. He will then write up detailed show notes which will be sent to you via email. Following this, a 90-minute session to talk through the notes (in person or remotely) gives you space to ask questions, test ideas and work through options.
Fee: £120
If you’re looking for more sustained support, extended show notes or a longer directing process can be arranged.
Testimonials:
“Julian’s in-depth notes were tremendously helpful. He had constructive notes about every aspect of the show, which were vital in helping me put the finishing touches on it, and I very much look forward to working with him again.”
- Glenn Moore
“I had Julian taking show notes for me last year and could not recommend him highly enough. He took a lot of notes during the preview and gave me thorough professional feedback about the narrative structure, the delivery and possible ideas on how to expand some routines; all trying to understand my voice rather than imposing his ideas. He’s professional, friendly, and a real pleasure to work with.”
- Giada Garofalo
“I found Julian’s notes extremely useful in the process of developing my show. He’s an excellent sounding board and was able to offer practical suggestions which helped me clarify what I was trying to do.”
- Matt Winning
“Julian’s insight to a show that I’d already performed 50+ times was a very useful fresh set of eyes that are well-versed in comedy. He picked out important details on the micro and macro level, provided reassurance about the necessity of certain bits, and was a great sounding board for discussion beyond his initial observations.”
